Aboard the mobile dental clinic, five-year-old Johnathon Maiori lay back in a dental chair for the first time in his life. With a bib clipped under his chin, and a lead, x-ray apron weighing him down, Johnathon took in the strange-looking implements; His expression went from confident to concerned. “Mommy?” he asked uncertainly. “I’m right here,” said his mom, Jessica Maiori.

The staff have a way of responding to that anxiety; it’s called patience. Before taking x-rays, they explained to Johnathon how they would take pictures of his teeth and why.

The dentist invited Johnathon to handle the instruments that she would be using as she explained what each one did. As he tapped a tentative finger on the saliva ejector, his eyes widened with delighted surprise. “It sucks,” he marvelled.

After having a check-up, a cleaning and a fluoride treatment, all Johnathon has to do is use his new toothbrush twice every day. All his parents have to do is help him with that, and bring him back in six months for his next check up. And Johnathon got his grin back!
